Pete Gibbon's Schweinerei tournament

Schweinerei is the German name for the popular game "Pass the Pigs". Pete Gibbon's Schweinerei tournament usually takes place on the second night of the break, over drinks after the evening meal. It involves, not surprisingly, a game of Schweinerei. The winner of the game takes possession of a sealed envelope which contains a destination that has been provided in advance and is unknown to anyone on the mission.

On the night of the draw, the holder of the envelope must choose to play it in either Kurt's veto round, Shaft's shaft round, or Grosser Vass's making grosser round. The choice must be made in advance. If a destination is vetoed, shafted or made grosser in the chosen round then the sealed envelope is opened and the destination inside read out. This destination then replaces the vetoed or shafted destination, or accompanies the additional destination that results from a making grosser. If nothing happens in the round in which the envelope is played, then the destination is not used.

Pete Gibbon's tournament first took place on Mission 15 15 Geneva.

Since Mission 19 19 Valletta the winner of Pete Gibbon's tournament may, if he is unhappy with the revealed destination, invoke the Gozerian to replace it.

The eighth tournament, on Mission 22 22 Lisbon, was notable for being the first that was subject to a rain delay. The competition could only be resumed after hastily relocating to an indoor venue.

Positioning the pigs

There was controversy in earlier missions when Steve was alleged to be trying to influence the result by controlling the position and orientation of the pigs immediately before throwing. Some observers think that an unfair advantage can be gained by this strategy. Ironically, Steve's own results have not seen a significant boost through use of this technique.

The current official line is that positioning the pigs is legal but to be avoided; however it is likely that all professional squads today use pig positioning concepts to some extent.

Sponsorship

Schweinerei's profile received a major boost on Mission 24 24 Arnhem when the international federation announced a €9.40 sponsorship deal with 2 bottles of "Op & Top".

Armgate

The Armgate Scandal occurred during Mission 29 29 Luxembourg (City). Steve was on 191 points and had scored a further 42 points. With 17 points needed to win, he rolled again. The first pig landed on its back. The second pig also landed on its back and slid towards Rupert. At that moment Rupert brought down his arm, trapping the pig underneath. The double razorback would have given Steve 20 points, the win and the Gozerian (that Rupert held). However, the intervention of Rupert caused the 20 points to be invalidated. Steve rolled on but on 249 points (one point from the win) got a pig out. This controversy caused Steve to crumble and he didn't win another point in the entire game. The tournament was eventually won by Dave whilst Rupert won the Gozerian. Rupert cheered in celebration and updated the Gozer the Gozerian page immediately to acknowledge his victory.

Sidergate

The Sidergate controversy occurred during Mission 33 33 Bayeux. Rupert rolled and immediately picked up his pigs and rolled, declaring that he had got a sider, scoring him one point. David, Dave and Mike all claimed that Rupert had actually got a pig out. Rupert's following roll was therefore declared null and void, but to this day Rupert claims that he did actually score a sider. David eventually won the competition.

Surfacegate

Complaints about the quality of the playing surface arose during Mission 35 35 Kendal. Several players claimed that the playing area did not meet official tournament standards, arguing that it was far too slippery, leading to an excess of siders and pig outs. With no alternative venue available and sponsors insisting that contractual obligations be fulfilled, they had little choice but to continue despite the unsatisfactory conditions. Steve was eventually declared the winner but it was Mike's record for the most consecutive siders (6) that will be remembered as the most controversial aspect of the competition, with many players seeing this as vindication of their earlier complaints.
